Anchor Brewing is proud to be America's first and oldest craft brewery. Its tradition stretches back to the glory days of the Gold Rush and to this day it still brews in the copper kettles of yesteryear. Anchor Brewing is the perfect symbiosis of classic brewing art and cutting-edge technology.
And they still make excellent beers like Steam Beer!
Attracted by the irresistible glamour of the gold rush, the German brewer Gottlieb Brekle and his family came to San Francisco in 1849. For 3500 American dollars, he bought a saloon where you could play a game of billiards over a good beer. Brekle quickly turned it into his own brewery and thus laid the foundation for the Anchor Brewery. Brekle's successors Ernst Baruth and Otto Schinkel Jr. named the brewery Anchor Brewery. No one knows why the two chose this name, but rumors say it was a tribute to San Francisco's thriving port. The years 1906 and 1907, however, were not to be good years for the brewery: after Ernst's sudden death surprised everyone, a destructive fire raged two months later, followed by a terrible earthquake. Just shortly after the brewery reopened at its new location, Otto was run over by a car. Fortunately, the two German brewers Joseph Kraus and August Meyer managed to keep Anchor alive.
During the Great Prohibition, production was completely stopped and there was no sales from the brewery, whether legal or illegal. If these times weren't bad enough, the reopened brewery burned down again shortly after the repeal of Prohibition.
But 100 years after the later owner Fritz Maytag took over the brewery, the Anchor beer began to be bottled and the beer revolution in San Francisco began. Beers like Liberty Ale quickly became a crowd puller and made the brewery known and popular far beyond the city limits of Fog City.
Today, Anchor Brewery is one of the most traditional breweries in America and is celebrated as a pioneer of the craft beer movement in the United States and the world.
Avant-garde or not, we love the honest, down-to-earth beers from Anchor Brewery!
