Boon Rawd Brewery

The beers from the Thai Boon Rawd Brewery are pure wanderlust.

First boats, then beer

When Praya Bhirom Bhakdi opened his business in 1910, it was not a brewery. The young man set up a ferry company that took people across the Chao Praya River by boat. His company flourished for almost two decades, but then something happened that forced the businessman to rethink. In 1929, the Memorial Bridge was built and was to connect Bangkok and Thonburi from then on. This was not a threat to Praya's business per se, but the wise man suspected that more bridges would be built in the future and that his fellow citizens would be less and less dependent on ferries. This realization prompted him to give up his company and look for other options. After a conversation with Mr. Eisenhoffer from the Paul Pickenpack trading company, Praya chose beer. In 1931 he applied to build Thailand's first brewery and three years later the time had come and his own brewery opened its doors. The Singha, which still exists and is popular today, was one of the first brews to be brewed by the new brewery. Because there was no competition in the country, the newly founded Boon Rawd Brewery was able to quickly establish itself: less than two years after opening, 40 percent of the beer consumed in Thailand came from Praya's pen. This trend continued even after the founder's death and the success of the Boon Rawd Brewery was unstoppable.

Enjoyment and responsibility

The brewery was modernized and expanded several times in the decades that followed in order to be able to meet the ever-increasing demand. To continue its streak of success, the Boon Rawd Brewery began exporting its popular Singha . Praya's descendants continued his business for 80 years. Today, the brewery is an integral part of its city culture and is involved in life in its homeland through charitable projects. The brewery promotes environmental protection, awards scholarships to university students, supports the education of its employees' children and has set up a foundation for medical care in the event of a disaster. The brewery's range includes a number of classics that are drunk throughout Asia and have now also conquered Europe. Boon Rawd's favorites include the aforementioned Singha and its lager Leo. The beers are refreshing, light-hearted brews that taste best when we dream of vacations in faraway countries or sit on a white sandy beach with our feet dangling in the crystal-clear water.
