Whether you're a long-standing Bamberg resident or a student new to Bamberg, everyone in Bamberg knows Spezi. The beer specialties of the Spezial brewery, such as its special smoked beer, are known far beyond the cathedral city's borders. No wonder, after all, this excellent beer has been around for almost 500 years.

Connoisseurs describe not only the special smoked beer but the entire range of the brewery Spezial as strong, rustic and somehow special. Especially in a positive way, because the brewery's good beer looks back on an eventful history in which it has proven itself time and again. It is not without reason that the people of Bamberg have been drinking their Spezi for 475 years. One special feature is its own malthouse. Hardly any brewery has its own malthouse these days. The brewery Spezial is different: In a complex process, the malt is dried over beech wood fires and acquires its unmistakable fine smoky aroma. What legend says was due to an accident and the poverty of a brewer actually arose from simple necessity: until industrialization, there was no other way to remove moisture from the barley than to dry it over a fire. The characteristic taste was still very popular after industrialization, and smoked beer had long since become a classic of German brewing. By preserving the old drying technology, the brewery Spezial is unique in Germany and its special smoked beer is a real Bamberg highlight.

In order to preserve tradition and to be able to offer customers the best possible product of excellent quality, only the very best ingredients go into the kettle at the Spezial brewery. Barley and hops come exclusively from regional farmers who produce organically or under controlled contract cultivation. Environmental protection and the sustainable use of resources are very important to the Merz family, who have run the brewery for several generations. This is also reflected in the decision to only use ecologically produced electricity. With a combined heat and power plant and photovoltaic system, they are setting a good example and doing a lot for our nature. This high standard of production and quality is one hundred percent reflected in the taste of their beers. Our favorite and an absolute evergreen is the Spezial Rauchbier .
