New York's Brooklyn district is known for many things: every visitor to the Big Apple walks across the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge at least once, but Coney Island with its old-time amusement parks and the always well-populated promenade, the triumphal arch in honor of sailors and soldiers, and the Botanical Garden are also Brooklyn's landmarks. There was a time when the district was also known for its beer, and the Brooklyn Brewery now wants to revive that.
In the late 19th century, Brooklyn was a melting pot of international trade. Alongside flourishing industry, there were shipyards and agricultural businesses, and people from all over the world flocked to live their share of the American Dream. To the delight of all beer lovers, there were also numerous brewers from Germany and Austria among the fortune hunters: Brooklyn's beer scene grew rapidly and was soon known throughout America for its outstanding beer. There was even a point when Brooklyn beer covered a full ten percent of the states' total beer demand. After this high point in Brooklyn's eventful history, the density of breweries decreased again and only a few breweries remained. With the advent of the craft beer movement, however, more and more people populated the breweries, wanting to build on the former heyday of traditional brewing locations and revitalizing many of these places. Steve Hindy and Tom Potter were among these ambitious people and their mission was clear: they wanted to help Brooklyn's formerly lively beer scene find new life.
The company really took off in 1996 when brewmaster Garrett Oliver joined the team and, with his help, the Brooklyn Brewery built its brewery in Williamsburg. Brewing could begin and the Brooklyn Brewery got off to a flying start. The first beers were shipped worldwide and Garrett attracted the attention of renowned judges with his outstanding creations. In 2014, Garrett caused a small sensation when the ambitious brewer became the first in his field to win the James Beard Award in the “Outstanding Spirits, Wine or Beer Professional” category. His success attracted other brewing legends to the company and the brewery put together a range of beers that are characterized by outstanding quality and unique taste. The Brooklyn Lager became the brewery’s flagship product and was honored with a gold medal at the World Beer Cup.
Brooklyn Brewery works with great success and even more enthusiasm every day to restore the former glory of Brooklyn's beer scene. In doing so, they spread the word about Brooklyn craft beer around the world and enrich the market with their flavorful creations - a true American dream!
