According to countless seafaring legends and fairy tales, the mermaid is a female creature that populates the oceans of the world and cruises the seas in search of human partners. If you believe the stories, the fish-tailed ladies are dependent on the goodwill of a man in order to be transformed back into their once human form or to be freed from their soulless existence in the depths of the sea. In art and in the form of figureheads on ships' bows, the mermaid symbolizes female eroticism. In the logo of the Californian brewery Coronado, on the other hand, the mermaid stands for the finest beer.
The brewery, which has a curvy sea beauty with a well-filled beer glass in its logo, is located on the island of the same name in the bay off San Diego. When the craft beer movement was still in its infancy, the brothers Rick and Ron Chapman opened a brewpub in their hometown in 1996. In doing so, they fulfilled a long-held dream and even got ahead of the craft beer trend that blossomed shortly afterwards. At that time, there were just five breweries in San Diego that ventured into craft beer. At the beginning, the brewpub produced beer exclusively for its own use and all brews were only available directly from the tap. That changed in 1998, when the first barrel was delivered to the Hotel Del Coronado. It would be another six years before the first brew was bottled. The in-house bottling plant caused a sudden increase in the Coronado Brewing Company's popularity and resulted in a much-needed expansion. When the island premises became too big in 2012, the team rented premises on the mainland and opened a new brewery there. The brewery reached its final milestone on the road to global fame in 2014, when it won the Mid Sized Brewery & Brewmaster Champion title at the World Beer Cup. Its winning streak has continued ever since, and has brought its team similarly prestigious awards in other competitions.
The basis for the international success are, of course, the beers. Under the watchful eye of the mermaid, the brewers produce a whole range of great beers that perfectly match the island atmosphere. The aim of the brewing activity is to create creations that, with their relaxed and easy-going nature, fit well with the laid-back atmosphere of California and the fresh cuisine of their homeland.
