The Irish brewery Guinness & Co. goes back to the brewer Arthur Guinness. He was brewmaster at the St. James's Gate Brewery and the first in his family in a long line of brewers. On December 31, 1759, he sealed his fate and that of his descendants by signing a lease for the St. James's Gate Brewery. At one point, the Guinness & Co. brewery was even considered the largest brewery in the world. Today, it is no longer that, but the family helped the company to worldwide fame. The brewery's symbol is a harp. The Guinness clan borrowed this beautiful symbol from their homeland: the harp of the former King of Ireland Brian Boru from the 15th century is considered the model for the harps that can be found on Irish coins, ID cards and official documents. The Guinness family was attracted to this symbol and found that it wonderfully represented Irish culture, their family's heritage and the traditions of Ireland. Quality is still the top priority at Guinness today and it has always been that way. In the past, the brewery sent men out to undertake uncomfortable and dangerous journeys to check the quality of the beer after it had been exported.
