Beer has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. Craft brewing has been practiced there for centuries and the country's cuisine goes hand in hand with the hearty, down-to-earth and rich beer creations. The country is dominated by large breweries, but also has a solid base of small traditional breweries. The craft beer movement has now arrived there too and is enriching the local beer market with unusual, innovative and hoppy variants. The young team from MadCat Brewing is at the forefront.
When the brewery opened its doors in 2011, it had a different name. The brewers and their equipment settled in a former club in the tranquil town of Jihlava and began brewing in the same place where the DJ used to send the dancing crowds into ecstasy. The brewing project seemed to be under a good star, because just one year later the team had their first major successes. With their powerful semi-dark beer Zikmund, they convinced the judges of a renowned national competition and brewed themselves a step on the winners' podium with third place. The streak of success continued and the small brewery was first named the third best brewery of the year and then the best microbrewery in the Czech Republic. With hard work, enthusiasm and a range of the finest craft beers up their sleeves, the brewery worked its way to the top of Czech brewing and its reputation soon preceded them beyond the country's borders.
This golden rocket launch not only ensured that everyone in the Czech Republic and the surrounding countries soon knew about their beer, but also that everyone wanted to try it. Demand grew day by day and the nightclub's capacity was more than full. Around the same time, the brewers came up with the name MadCat and decided to give the brewery a new name. Excited by this step, the team set out to look for new premises and fell in love with an old distillery in neighboring Kamenice. Against all reason, the brewery decided to save the disused building and resume the craft in its hallowed halls. Work began in 2017 and just one year later the first batch of beer was brewed there. More prizes and awards followed and MadCat Craft Brewing continued to expand its position in the Czech and international beer scene by participating in festivals, trade fairs and events.
