The Rothaus brewery is not only home to the famous Tannenzäpfle, but also Germany's highest brewery. At an altitude of around 1000 meters, the brewery has been producing the finest beer for more than 200 years.
The roots of the Rothaus brewery go back to the “Zum Roten Haus” pub. The pub was founded in the 17th century, the brewery followed 100 years later and was run by the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien. In addition to the good view, the location offered numerous other advantages: the good spring water is ideal for brewing and the surrounding forests provided the brewery’s ovens with sufficient firewood. The brewery also became an important point of contact on the major trade routes of the south. When the monastery was secularized 15 years later, the brewery fell into state hands and from then on bore the title “Grand Ducal Baden State Brewery Rothaus”. The Grand Duke was eventually dropped, the brewery kept the rest of the name and is still called the Baden State Brewery Rothaus today. The change of ownership had no negative impact on the sales of the beer and so the brewery was not only modernized but also expanded. The progress of technology was unstoppable and Rothaus made good use of it: various machines simplified the production process and the brewery's own railway accelerated transport. Rothaus was on the rise, and even the two fires could not stop it. The brewery suffered major losses twice due to fire, but the passionate commitment of all employees and the will to succeed made it possible to rebuild and build on earlier times.
The Tannenzäpfle ultimately provided the big breakthrough. In 1956, brewery director Erwin Nägele decided to sell the Tannenzäpfle pilsner in a size that was quite unusual at the time. In the 1950s, most beers were sold in 0.7-liter bottles. Erwin Nägele wanted to establish a more practical size and brought the Tannenzäpfle onto the market in 0.33-liter bottles. The venture was rewarded with success and made the brewery known throughout the country. Since then, delicious beer with a sustainability concept has been brewed in the heart of the Black Forest. Protecting their beautiful homeland is a matter close to the hearts of the Rothaus team, and they integrate it into their everyday work with emphasis and commitment. The brewery has been committed to environmental protection for years and is constantly reducing its ecological footprint. All electricity comes from renewable energy sources and is also green electricity. In addition to new, energy-efficient systems, a solar thermal system also ensures that CO2 consumption is reduced. The brewery is committed to promoting a lively beer culture at all its locations in Germany and spreads the enjoyment of Baden specialties far beyond the borders of Baden-Württemberg.
