San Miguel is a brewery, but the international company could almost be described as an empire. The company's beer is sold all over the world and is one of the most famous brews in the world. The name can also be heard in sports: the brewery sponsors more than just one team and supports teams in basketball, football and volleyball. Although San Miguel sounds Spanish, the company originally comes from the Philippines. Today, the beer is not only drunk all over the world, it is also brewed in various locations to avoid long transport routes and to guarantee the customer the freshest product possible.
It all began in 1889, when a wealthy businessman from Manila decided to produce his own beer. He had left his Spanish homeland to trade in exotic Asia and wanted to bring a piece of home with his beer. Because his brand new company was located in Manila's San Miguel district, the name was quickly found. For luck, good business and God's blessing, the brewery was also opened on St. Michael's Day, September 29th. The company had two major branches: ice cream and beer. San Miguel was the first brewery in Asia to use the latest technology and was therefore able to score points with incomparable quality. The range included three classics that sold like hot cakes. Because the Philippines had a fairly limited beer market, the company's management decided to export and implemented this plan in 1914. The beer conquered the entire Asian region and then the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The foundation for today's success had been laid and San Miguel had established itself as a permanent fixture on the international beer market.
In order to stay up to date even after more than 130 years of brewery history, the company invests in social and ecological causes. Since 2003, a beer made from organic raw materials has been available in Spain. San Miguel is also involved in professional sports: numerous teams are sponsored by the company and supported financially. However, the number one priority is beer.
