Steamworks Brewing Co.

When the grandfather moved from Austria to Canada in the 1930s and his sister stayed behind in Vienna, they had no idea that their two grandchildren would one day enter the beer business. It took another two generations before the Austrian-Canadian family of musicians produced a brewer: Eli, who discovered his love of beer during his trip to Europe and quickly learned the brewing trade, bought the Gastown Brewpub. The venerable building housed a real treasure: a steam heating system. The technology of the steam brewing process dates back to the pioneering days and was hardly used at the end of the 20th century. Eli showed a spirit of discovery and brought a long-forgotten tradition back to life. Canada's first steam brewery was born and brewing could begin!

From Canada to Austria

In order to not only breathe new life into the Canadian beer scene, but also to breathe new life into it, Eli regularly visited the homeland of his ancestors. Following in his grandfather's footsteps, he came across other beer recipes as well as his cousin Herbert. A close friendship developed that was not affected by the many miles between Salzburg and Vancouver, and so it was no surprise when the two cousins decided to become business partners. Beer brings people together, and that also applies to Herbert and Eli. With good humor and energy, the two expanded the Canadian brewery's sphere of influence to include Europe and since then, in addition to classics such as their Pale Ale, they have also sold unusual creations such as Killer Cucumber Ale ( David Hertl is not the only one who dares to turn cucumbers into beer ) or their Jasmine IPA , which is brewed with aromatic jasmine flowers. The beers from Steamworks Brewing not only taste good to connoisseurs on two continents, they have also convinced the juries of numerous competitions. With excellent recipes, hand-picked ingredients and excellent quality, we create beers that inspire.

Born in Vancouver, brewed in Berlin

After a few years, sales were so high that the small Vancouver steam brewery was bursting at the seams. The Steamworks Brewpub could no longer keep up with the high demand, so a second brewery was built in Burnaby. In the adjoining Tap Room, visitors can sample the wide range of products in a cozy atmosphere and see for themselves the passion behind this company. To avoid long transport routes, the production of beers for the European market was moved to the Craft Center in Berlin. Here, beers are brewed using carefully selected ingredients and fine Austrian-Canadian recipes that have the original taste but are much better for the ecological conscience. Clever!

“Separated by worlds, united in beer.”
