Thwaites Brewery

There is not much going on in the tranquil village of Mellor Brook: there is a bakery, a community centre and fewer than 3,000 residents. Nevertheless, the village has made a name for itself in the UK and the world, and that is thanks to the Thwaites Brewery.

The Thwaites — a beer-loving family

The traditional brewery from the north of England dates back to the former Eanam Brewery. Daniel Thwaites first became a partner and then sole owner of this brewery in the early 19th century. After his death, his three brothers took over the company and added another brewery. After his siblings retired, first Daniel and then Elma Thwaites took over the company. Over the years, the brewery grew and prospered, constantly adding to its range of fine English beers. Expensive expansions were carried out to bring the brewery and brewing system up to the latest state of the art. The brewing business was booming and the creations of the Thwaites Brewery were causing a stir, and not only on the national beer market. The good beer was showered with awards and the brewery not only expanded to include more breweries, but also bought and built hotels, inns and pubs where this fine beer could be enjoyed.

From carriage horse to pet

Shire horses are a piece of tradition and a glorious past. This special breed of horse is characterized by its enormous size and strength and was used in Great Britain primarily as a draft animal. At the Thwaites Brewery, these majestic giants pulled the carriages with the beer barrels and patiently supplied whole regions with delicious beer. Today, horses are no longer needed to get the beer to the people, but the animals are simply part of the Thwaites family and are still kept and cared for in the brewery to this day. The Thwaites Brewery employs a number of horse managers who look after the well-being of the gentle giants and also ensure that the animals arrive on time and well rested for their appearances in the brewery, hotels and pubs. In addition to this relic of the past, the beer also represents the work, dedication and hard work from more than 200 years of brewery history. Creations like Crafty Dan's 13 Guns combine brewing tradition with modern, innovative ideas and show that the Thwaites Brewery team honors its roots while taking bold steps into the future.
