Bierothek® becomes climate positive

The well-known beer retailer Bierothek® is making progress in climate protection and is becoming one of the first climate-positive companies in its industry. Together with Planted and its customers, Bierothek® is now also planting trees in Germany in addition to CO2 offsetting in order to carry out active climate protection locally.

In recent months, Bamberg-based Bierothek GmbH has analyzed its CO2 footprint in collaboration with the non-profit climate protection start-up Planted and set up a climate protection program called “Beer Plants Trees®”. “It was a lengthy but also very educational process for us to calculate our CO2 emissions along the value chain and thus make them transparent,” says the responsible Bierothek® employee Angus Nicholson. By decommissioning CO2 certificates, the Bierothek® has not only been offsetting its entire CO2 requirements since June 2021, but is also going one step further together with its customers. “As a company, we not only want to be climate neutral, but also climate positive. That’s why we also plant trees in Germany together with our customers,” explains Bierothek® founder Christian Klemenz.

In collaboration with Planted, climate-stable mixed forests in Germany are being reforested. Planting trees in Germany is more expensive than reforestation abroad, but many people recently found out firsthand that local climate protection is even more important. So if a Bierothek® customer donates 1 euro for a tree with their purchase, the Bierothek®, together with Planted, offsets the remaining amount for a tree in order to do something together in terms of sustainability and climate protection directly on site in Germany. Every Bierothek® customer who finances a tree with their €1 donation can also take part in a raffle to personally take part in a planting campaign with the climate forester. “We hereby encourage other beer retailers and breweries to join the “Beer Plants Trees®” campaign and make beer a tool in the fight against climate change,” adds Planted founder Wilhelm Hammes.
