Visiting a beer cellar is an experience that is just as much a part of the Franconian lifestyle as the Sunday roast in the inn, the dumpling at Schäuferla and the freshly caught carp in all months that contain an “r”. As soon as the temperatures get warmer and the sun shines from the sky, the Franconians and their entire families flock to the nearest cellar to enjoy homemade snacks and freshly tapped beer in the shade of mighty chestnut or lime trees. You meet up with friends and acquaintances in the cellar, celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions there, drink your after-work beer there and the regulars often go outside to the beer benches in spring and summer. The perfect accompaniment to bratwursts, Ziebeleskäs, plum baams, sausage with music and good stone-oven bread is Kellerbier.
Because not everyone gets to enjoy a beer cellar visit on a regular basis, many Franconian breweries bottle their cellar beer. This is also the case with the Leikeim brewery from Altenkunstadt: their natural cellar beer is based on the traditional style and impresses with its drinkable character.
The copper-gold specialty is crowned with an impressive amount of foam and presents a fine yeast cloudiness. The honey-sweet, delicately fruity scent is followed by a malty taste with caramel and straw notes, which is punctuated by floral hops, a subtle bitterness and a gentle tartness.
