"C’est ma Madeleine de Proust" — This French proverb describes smells that evoke old memories and make one fall into nostalgic raptures. The words go back to the writer Marcel Proust, who felt reminded of his childhood at the smell of oven-fresh Madeleines.
The elegant shortbread is the namesake of a beer created with the French proverb in mind. With Madeleine, the Dutch brewery has developed an elegant bock beer that conjures up 6.0% alcohol and a wonderfully dark aroma in your glass. The appearance of the bottom-fermented beer is also dark: the drink presents itself in a ruby-red shimmering facet of mahogany and is adorned with a hand’s breadth of fleeting ivory-colored foam. The scent of freshly roasted grain fills the air and combines with notes of cocoa and prunes to create an irresistible blend. In contrast to Bavarian bock beers, Madeleine is a little more light-footed and has a less powerful body. A symphony of malt, dried figs, tenderly melting caramel, chocolate and brown bread spreads out on the palate and tickles the taste buds with delicate sweetness and strong roasted aromas. Two types of hops deliver harmonious notes of earthy herbs and a complementary bitterness.
Madeleine is an unconventional buck with a medium build and a full-bodied, round taste.
