There are certainly countless hills in Germany that bear the name Kreuzberg. Any hill with a cross on it could theoretically be called that, but in the following we want to talk about the Kreuzberg, which is located at the gates of Franconian Switzerland and towers over the small town of Hallerndorf. This mountain is the namesake of the Kreuzberg brewery and the district of Hallerndorf with the same name.
The Upper Franconian brewery was founded more than 550 years ago by the Friedel family and was originally located in the Schnaid district. The Friedel family is still at the helm of the brewery today, but they no longer brew in Schnaid. In 2007, the family moved with all their belongings to the newly built halls on the Kreuzberg. The old brewery was leased to Andreas Gänstaller , who brewed his beer there from 2011. After the brewing legend went into well-deserved retirement in 2022, the Hertl brewery took over the traditional brewery. Andreas' beers have since been brewed by a neighboring brewery. Not far away is the new brewery on the Kreuzberg with a brewing system, beer cellar and visitor center. The spacious rooms can also be used for meetings and celebrations. Together with her four children and her husband, Luitgard Friedel-Winkelmann, ancestor of the Friedel family, manages the brewing and management. The couple have been in charge since 1991 and brew together, as both Norbert and Luitgard have learned the craft of brewing. The beer is brewed using tried-and-tested family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. The range consists of a number of down-to-earth classics that are brewed using Franconian brewing methods. The raw materials come from regional farmers wherever possible and are processed into the finest beer using a gentle process.
The family demonstrates its hospitality day after day. In summer, the brewery's own beer cellar is a meeting point for guests from near and far, and the brewery itself welcomes visitors all year round. Attracted by the culinary delicacies from the kitchen and the freshly brewed beer, countless people flock to Kreuzberg year after year and enjoy the Franconian specialties in solid and liquid form. In addition to beer tasting, the brewery offers a special highlight: interested visitors have been able to experience the brewery in five dimensions since 2015. Thanks to the latest cinema technology, the brewing process can be followed live with sounds, smells and movement while sitting comfortably in an armchair. If you would like to see the processes behind the beer and the work of the brewers, you can also book a tour of the brewery instead.
