When you think of the range of drinks in Greece, you not only think of an impossible catchy tune, but also a whole range of fine wines. All kinds of grape varieties thrive on the sunny slopes of the Mediterranean country, producing fine wines. Even though it was not assumed for a long time, the country's brewing history probably goes back several thousand years and barley juice has now developed into a real alternative to wine. One team that is driving this development forward with their art is the Kykao brewery.
The young brewery is based at the top of the Peloponnese and has been producing hand-crafted beer specialties since 2018. Inspired by a Greek legend, the brewers want to make beers that generate almost transcendental experiences. Their aspirations are based on the legend of the mysteries of Eleusis. In an elaborate ceremony, the abduction of Demeter's daughter Persephone by the god of the underworld Hades and her return to the world of the living was celebrated. The festivities lasted several days and were kept strictly secret. Only a select group was allowed to take part in the spectacle. An integral part of the rituals was a period of fasting, which ended with a special drink. The drink is now said to have a psychedelic effect, which could explain the religious experiences and encounters with God of the festival participants. It is suspected that ergot was responsible for this. Kykao's beers obviously do not contain any psychedelic properties and certainly no ergot, but the brewers know their craft and create creations that transport you to another world with imagination and irresistible depths of flavor.
Kykao is an independent microbrewery with the aim of producing first-class craft beer. Its name is derived from the Greek kykao, which means to stir, confuse or mix together. With its unusual ideas, the brewery wants to touch people and give them unforgettable enjoyment experiences. By wildly experimenting with brewing techniques, raw materials and styles, the team has created an illustrious range of exciting, challenging, unconventional beers. The brewers spare no expense or effort to create outstanding brews: some of the creations mature for several years in oak barrels , others contain expensive raw materials such as fine coffee from Panama or hand-picked mulberries.
