The Czech Republic is known for its excellent beer. The country southeast of Germany is proud of its centuries-old beer culture and rich brewing tradition. For a long time, the Czech beer market was dominated by long-established breweries, but the craft beer movement has brought a breath of fresh air to the glass here too: Young breweries with innovative ideas and creative beers are becoming more and more established. The family brewery Zichovec definitely belongs to the category of modern breweries and provides not only the Czech Republic with delicious, hand-brewed beer specialties.
The microbrewery was founded on a sudden idea by Ivan Husák. In 2010, the young Czech had a sudden brainwave and decided to set his own brewery in mind. His family laughed at the absurd plan, and his brother merely gave the idea a brotherly slap in the face. But Ivan was not deterred by his relatives' lack of enthusiasm and pursued his plan with zeal and a lot of passion. Just two years later, the small town of Zichovec in the northwest of Prague became both the home and the namesake of the brand new brewery. The village was undergoing a major overhaul at the time, so a brewery came at just the right time. In addition to Pivovar Zichovec's hallowed halls, a new town hall, a restaurant, a grocery store and the church also received a new coat of paint. The brewery's close connection to its home town was inevitable and can be seen in the brewery's branding, among other things: bottles and cans are adorned with labels in the shape of Zichovec's small chapel. With patriotic design and a brand new brewery, brewing could begin.
After the brewery had initially specialized in bottom-fermented beers, new creations were gradually added. In 2015, for example, the first barrel-aged beer was created: the brewery bought a recently emptied port wine barrel with a small remainder of the deep red specialty and experimented with it. The result was so convincing that since then more than 100 barrels have been filled with a wide variety of beers. The initially small brewery quickly outgrew the first building and moved to neighboring Louny. Ivan's sons Ondřey and Jan also took over the management of the brewery and expanded the range to include a whole range of creative beer specialties. In order to bring their delicious beer to thirsty people, a bus was purchased in 2017: an old city bus was quickly converted into a mobile pub and has been driving from festival to festival ever since. Rodinny Pivovar Zichovec lives its love of beer and spreads its passion with every bottle and can.
The brewery stands for a respectful approach to the venerable craft of brewing, modesty, a great desire to experiment and a little bit of craziness - the perfect recipe for particularly good beer!
