When 19-year-old Benjamin Greene opened the doors of his own brewery in 1799, he probably never imagined that his brewery would become a multi-million dollar company. Greene King's success story began in the idyllic little town of Bury St. Edmunds: Benjamin Greene began his brewing venture in the former Wright Brewery under the new name Westgate Brewery. Over time, several companies joined Greene King, so that the brewery not only survived the Second World War but also grew rapidly. The number of employees has multiplied steadily since then and business has boomed from the beginning to today.
