The Strong Suffolk Dark Ale is a very special beer specialty from Greene King. After completion, the dark beer is stored in oak barrels for two years and during this maturation process it not only gains in alcohol content, but also in aroma and taste.
The strong beer is a blend of two beers and is brewed according to an old recipe from the 18th century. A tunnel that used to connect the monastery with the abbot's house serves as the fermentation cellar. The massive oak barrels in which the beer matures to its full splendor can still be found there today. Barrel storage gives the ale its special character and creates an inimitable range of flavors.
The Strong Suffolk Dark Ale flows into the glass in an opaque mahogany tone. When exposed to light, the beer shows wonderful copper-red reflections. A fine, hazelnut-brown foam crowns the beer and smells delicately of malt. The creamy caramel note of the malt is accompanied by a fine aroma of dark grapes. In combination with the subtle oak character, notes of vanilla and tannins, the smell of the red grape is reminiscent of a voluminous red wine. The initial taste reveals a malty beer that is initially beautifully sweet and fruity on the palate. On the tongue, sweet, ripe grapes meet dried red fruits and dark caramel. The barrel aging contributes wonderfully luxurious brandy notes, and a touch of nut chocolate refines the aromas. The hops only come into play in the finish and provide a great bitterness that balances the sweetness wonderfully.
The Strong Suffolk Dark Ale from Greene King is a delicately composed beer that combines everything you would expect from a strong beer: heavy sweetness and highly aromatic volume meet crisp bitterness.
