In the context of German beer history, the cathedral city of Bamberg is an important center. The World Heritage Site has an unparalleled density of breweries and is home to some of the oldest breweries in the country. The local beer culture has flourished for almost a thousand years and is a vibrant part of everyday life. Breweries and restaurants dot the Franconian map and invite you to linger with fresh beer and matching home cooking. The Klosterbräu has been part of Bamberg's colorful beer landscape for almost 700 years, making it the oldest brewery in the city that is still in existence.
The traditional brewery was first mentioned in a document in 1333. That was when the success story that continues to this day began and the foundation stone for the Klosterbräu was laid. Exactly two hundred years later, the brewery was named the Prince-Bishop's Brown Beer House and held this title for more than 250 years. The brewery then passed into the hands of private individuals and changed hands several times. The Braun family bought the company in 1851 and successfully led it into the 21st century. The current owner is the Wörner family. In addition to the excellent beer, the brewery's special location is also responsible for its success: Nestled in the winding thicket of medieval half-timbered houses, the Klosterbräu stands between the historic Böttingerhaus and the Villa Concordia. The magnificent beer garden towers over the river and offers a fantastic view of the Mühlenviertel and the merrily babbling Regnitz. When walking through the old town, it is almost impossible to miss the Klosterbräu and the path to the Hain city park also leads directly past it.
The brewery's concept revolves around Franconian hospitality: with hearty cuisine and freshly brewed beers, the Klosterbräu invites visitors from near and far to make themselves comfortable in the restaurant, the Braunbierstübla, the vaulted cellar, the barn, the Schwemme, on the stepped terrace or in the beer garden. In a rustic ambience and convivial atmosphere, you can sample the house's specialties and really enjoy yourself. The Klosterbräu's beer selection includes a range of down-to-earth creations made with natural ingredients and tried-and-tested craftsmanship. Because quality and taste are areas in which master brewer Wolfgang Vogel makes no compromises, he only uses natural hops and select grains. Some of his recipes are several centuries old and, like the Bamberger Braunbier, have been passed down from generation to generation of brewers. The brewery's repertoire is small but fine and delivers all the classics of the Franconian beer scene in an artisanal manner.
