The first Zoigl from Hösl comes from a time marked by the horrors of the First World War. Master brewer and boss of the brewery Michael Hösl was called to the front and in his absence the storage cellar emptied rapidly. However, before the beer supplies could completely evaporate, his wife Margarete grabbed the mash paddle and continued brewing in her husband’s name. Michael sent the recipe for the fine Hösl’sche Zoigl by post and his wife was able to secure the continued existence of the brewery.
To this day, Hösl brews the well-known Zoigl, which is openly fermented and matures for a long time. The unfiltered beer specialty is an Upper Palatinate classic and is still brewed just as it was back then, even if the industrious Margarete is no longer to be found in the brewhouse.
My Zoigl brings a tasty 5.5% alcohol content to the table and presents itself in a naturally cloudy amber gold in the glass. A copper-red shimmer runs through the beer, on which a stately foam crown in off-white is enthroned. The classic beer is characterized by its subtly balanced character: the unfiltered specialty is both wonderfully mild and powerfully full-bodied. My Zoigl from Hösl is exactly the right drink for everyone who likes tasty, uncomplicated and down-to-earth beers.
