Strawberries are a summer gift. They literally sweeten the warm season for us and decorate coffee tables, menus and dessert bowls in May, June and July. We love the red fruit in every form, but one of our favorites is grandma’s strawberry cake. The basis is a heavenly airy sponge cake that is so light and fluffy as if it were baked from clouds. Lightly sugared strawberries from the garden are layered on the pastry, which smells of vanilla and love. The fruit is still warm from the summer sun and so ripe that sweet, red juice seeps into the cake base. A glossy icing completes the work of art, which is served with a cup of coffee and a generous dollop of whipped cream.
We like strawberry beer at least as much as strawberry cake. Anyone wrinkling their nose critically should try BrewDog’s berry composition: Their Strawberry Milkshake is a creamy India Pale Ale flavored with a truckload of fresh strawberries. The beer has the texture and delicious taste of a strawberry milkshake thanks to the addition of lactose and fruit and is the perfect summertime treat. It goes wonderfully with hot temperatures and in winter it whisks us away to warmer, more beautiful climes for a few precious moments.
