Fuller’s Vintage Ale has been around for more than 20 years, but the 2017 version is still something special in this long line of exceptional beers. It’s like the premiere of Georgina Young, the new head brewer at Fuller’s. She is the first woman in history to hold this post in the brewery and celebrated this welcome development with an unprecedented combination of Denali, Target and Goldings hops with the brand new British malt Laureate.
The result is a strong ale with a powerful 8.5% alcohol content. After the brewing process has been completed, the finished beer is bottled and ready for further maturation. The vintage beers are wonderfully suited to be stored in the cellar. Over time they gain additional depth and taste intensity. Provided you manage to stay away from it for so long.
The Vintage Ale 2017 is a magnificent copper red with a beige head in the glass. The fine foam exudes a wonderful scent of powerful malt, roasted nuts, candied red fruits and freshly baked bread. The initial taste reveals a complex body of aromas with tasty notes of full-bodied malt, toffee, plum jam and sugar candy. A subtle bitterness rounds off the taste experience.
The taste can vary depending on the ripening time. We suspect that it just gets better the longer you wait.
