This crowd favorite from Belhaven is the epitome of a Scottish beer: dark, strong and aromatic.
To create a rich, layered beer, Belhaven’s brewers brewed three different malts, roasted barley and oats. The result is an intense, complex beer with a symphony of dark flavors.
The Scottish Oat Stout flows into the glass in a deep black ebony color and forms a small, hazelnut-brown head of foam. A wonderfully dark aroma of strongly roasted malts and freshly brewed coffee rises from the fine-pored, dense foam. This roast-intensive blend is accompanied by soft caramel, dried red fruits and a touch of floral hops. The initial drink reveals a voluminous body with gentle carbonation and a warming 7.0% alcohol content. The Scottish Oat Stout is soft and smooth on the tongue, the wonderfully creamy taste of melt-in-the-mouth chocolate reaches the palate first. An intense coffee note follows the foot and brings with it subtly smoky roasted malt and a hint of dried fruit. The stout is a complex, intense beer with a long-lasting sweetness that is complemented by delicate bitter notes.
The brewers at Belhaven recommend their Scottish Out Stout as a complementary accompaniment to hearty meat dishes. The dark roasted flavors go wonderfully with braised meat. We have in mind an oven-braised beef bourguignon with rosemary potatoes and a creamy red wine sauce!
