Sometimes the names of beers promise more than the brew can actually deliver. Especially in the craft beer scene, grandiose titles are the order of the day - and not every brew meets the expectations raised. With the Extra Strong Scottish Lager from Tennent Caledonian Breweries, things are completely different.
The malt-focused creation is stylistically based on the classic Scottish lager and tastes exactly as it should. The "Extra Strong" in the title aptly represents the crisp 9.0% alcohol content and arouses anticipation that is absolutely justified. The noble tipple is produced in the Wellpark Brewery, the historic site of the Tennet Caledonian Breweries, and flows into the glass in a crystal-clear, shiny old gold with a copper-red shimmer. A creamy crown of white foam sits on top and entices you to try it with a bouquet of strong malt and fruity hops. The first sip is fresh, dry and surprisingly light-footed. Velvety soft grain combines with creamy caramel, golden forest honey and spicy yeast to create a stately body that is underlined by sweet berry notes, floral hints and a hint of exotic fruit. A fruity finish with malty elements concludes the beer enjoyment and makes you want a second one.
Be careful: because the alcohol is so cleverly integrated into the taste, you only notice it when the world around you loses its sharp edges.
