Like all countries, the Netherlands has its own selection of individual sweets. Our northwestern neighbors are known for their wide selection of different types of licorice, and they also have their own version of the American pancake, Poffertjes. At the markets you can buy delicious apple pancakes and olie balls, and if you're lucky you'll also find a stall selling fresh stroopwafels. This Dutch variation on the classic waffle is paper-thin, baked until golden brown and filled with a sweet syrup. There is a delicious caramel layer between two round waffles, which is wonderfully creamy when fresh and still warm.
Two Chefs Brewing is a brewery from Amsterdam that has captured the charm of stroopwafels in a beer. Their liquid version of the pastry classic is a rich stout with 6.0% alcohol content. A select selection of dark malts, crystal malts and caramel malts give the brew a grippy richness and a full-bodied character. The Stroopwafel flavor is created through a range of natural flavors: gentle notes of caramel, vanilla and cinnamon make you think you're biting into a freshly baked Stroopwafel from the first sip.
Traditionally, stroopwafels are eaten with a cup of tea or coffee, but how about enjoying the pastry with the right beer?
