Brogue is the name for a traditional footwear: the shoe is made of leather and classically has a perforated pattern. Although this type of shoe is worn by many people around the world today, the model originally comes from the British Isles. They were developed by the shepherds of Ireland and Scotland. Because the men and women had to walk long distances over rough, swampy terrain, they provided their shoes with a series of holes through which the swamp water could flow in and out. The fashion industry became aware of the special shoe in the early 20th century and catapulted it into the focus of the population. Nowadays, the holes are only for decoration and are no longer drilled through the entire upper material.

The Irish brewery Rye River Brewing is proud of its roots and honors the shoe of its ancestors with a fine red beer. Their Brogue Irish Red is a culinary poem spun from Vienna, Munich and caramel malts and brings an earthy bouquet of dark fruits, toffee and roasted bitterness to the glass. The specialty has a mild 4.4% alcohol content and its round taste not only wraps us around its finger: The brew was named the best beer in Ireland at the World Beer Awards in 2022.
