On a particularly hot, dusty, dry day there is only one thing the tongue sticking to the palate longs for: a sweet, creamy, velvety soft milkshake! But now there is a beer that could overtake the popular summer drink. David Hertl made the impossible possible and combined the best of both worlds. His Milky Grapefruit New England IPA combines the fine mouthfeel and the milky sweetness of a milkshake with the bitter freshness of a grapefruit and adds a generous helping of hops.
The result is a NEIPA with a quick-witted 7.2% alcohol content and summery flair, thanks to the addition of grapefruit juice. Hertl’s creation flows into the glass in a richly clouded orange-gold and is adorned with a small crown of airy, white foam. The grapefruit from the title literally jumps in the face and tickles the olfactory nerves with fruity acidity and fresh liveliness. The taste follows this first impression and caresses the palate with large grapefruit notes, which bring a nice tartness, some acidity and the typical aroma of the citrus fruit with it. Added to this are the taste nuances of the hop varieties BRU1, Citra BBC and Galaxy, which, among other things, bring a pointed bitterness into play. The added milk sugar provides the touch of milkshake, three different types of malt provide the silky mouthfeel.
