Prince Regent Luitpold’s full name was Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm of Bavaria and he was born in Würzburg in the 1820s. The monarch had a passion for painting and was responsible for much of the cultural development of Munich in his era. He promoted art in his city, engaged young, aspiring artists and ensured that museums and theaters were built. It is also thanks to him that women were admitted to Bavarian universities as early as the beginning of the 20th century. The passionate mountaineer, swimmer, painter and hunter is credited with numerous other achievements, but here we are not going to focus on his political or cultural work, but rather on a fine beer that is still brewed in his honor today.

The brew comes from the König Ludwig Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg and is aptly called Prinzregent Luitpold Weizenbock. The strong brew has an alcohol content of 8.0% and, in addition to the indispensable barley malt, also contains wheat malt in light and dark versions.

In the glass, Luitpold’s beer homage presents itself in an opaque old gold with a fleeting head of foam. The Doppelbock smells and tastes of ripe banana, creamy caramel, warm spices, grainy grain and orange marmalade. A hint of grassy hops rounds off the taste experience harmoniously.
