What happens when free spirits and self-proclaimed bastards join forces? Something wonderful!
The Freigeist Bierkultur brewery from Stolberg has teamed up with the Beer Bastards from Bulgaria for their latest project. The young wild ones have had a long journey behind them, and that can’t just be measured in kilometers: after the brewing process was completed, their collective work was stored in barrels for an impressive four years. The oak vessels previously housed the finest French Pinot Noir and released a whole lot of fine flavor into the beer as it matured. But the wine’s influence doesn’t stop there: the brew contains the finest grape must from the Pinot Noir grape variety, which is characterized by its fruity berry notes and a delicate nutty note. The grapes also provided wild yeasts that stick to the fruit skins and help the beer ferment spontaneously.
At the end of the wine-like process there is a honey-gold beer with a warm copper shimmer and a fleeting head of foam. Dark grapes run like a blue thread through the enjoyment of beer and shape both the scent and the aroma. This is accompanied by spicy wood, red berries, gentle malt, funky yeast and an elegant, fruity acidity. A dry, sour finish rounds off the drinking experience.
