May is a wonderful month: it often brings the first really warm days, the peonies finally bloom and it heralds the start of the strawberry harvest. In May, however, it is not only the red fruits that are ripe, you can also harvest chard, radishes, lettuce, spinach, spring onions and rhubarb. The carnations bloom and poppies, ranunculus, lily of the valley, daisies, forget-me-nots, mallows and pansies also add colour to the garden. Father’s and Mother’s Day fall in May and employees enjoy the day off on May 1st, Ascension Day, Corpus Christi and Pentecost. Because of the many public holidays, you can often go away for a long weekend in May or throw barbecues with friends during the week.
The perfect beer for barbecues, dancing into May and the first cozy evenings on the balcony comes from the Zehendner brewery in Mönchsambach. Every year, just in time for May Day, the popular Mönchsambacher Maibock is available, which scores with a good 6.5% alcohol content and a subtly balanced taste. The honey-gold brew smells of freshly mown grass, floral hay, oven-fresh brioche and a little toffee. If you follow this olfactory invitation, you will be rewarded with a bouquet of very similar flavors: creamy caramel, grainy grain, honey, herbs and bread. Delicious!
