Hopfen Dolde is the classic in the range of fine Franconian specialties from the Hopfengarten brewery. The smallest brewery in Bamberg brews with its own hops from the family nursery and uses the aromatic Perle variety for its Pils hops Dolde. This hop, which is traditional in Franconia and Bavaria, brings a flavor profile to the beer that provides hints of mint and pine as well as a delicate spiciness. This aroma harmonises wonderfully with the natural bitterness and strength of the Pilsner and gives it a playful quality.
The dewy Bamberger Pils flows into the glass in a color that is quite unusual for the style: Hopfen Dolde comes in a crystal-clear copper red and is crowned with a hand’s breadth of ivory-colored foam. A surprisingly malty scent emerges from the ruby-red beer and combines in the nose with floral hops, herbal notes and lemon zest to form an enticing mixture. The initial sip reveals a lean but full-bodied body that unfolds with smooth fullness on the palate. A bouquet of hops blossoms on a sweet malt bed that tastes of oven-fresh bread and grain: lime, grass and summer flowers. A pointed bitterness harmoniously rounds off the smooth beer enjoyment and leads into a hoppy finish with dry yeast wort.
The Hopfen Dolde from the Hopfengarten is an unconventional Pilsner with taste and character.
