The special thing about this beer specialty is the hops. Not only did Fresh Hop contain five different types of hops, the hops were also brewed in their freshest state. As a rule, the hops are brewed in dried form or as pellets; for the Fresh Hop Festbier, the Überquell brewer personally harvests the hops and then throws them into the kettle just a few hours later. Early in the morning, the brewer visits his favorite hop farmer and, under his expert supervision (and perhaps with a helping hand or two), harvests the aromatic hop varieties Tradition, Hercules, Perle, Saphir and Hallertau Blanc. The hops are then processed further in the afternoon of the same day.
The result is a hoppy beer that wonderfully presents all facets of green gold.
The Fresh Hop Festbier smells wonderfully of fresh hops as soon as you open the bottle: floral, grassy, fruity and beautifully bitter. The sunny yellow beer with amber reflections has a medium body, gentle carbonation and a pleasantly velvety mouthfeel. As expected, Fresh Hop tastes hoppy. A fine, citrusy fruitiness mixes with green hops and a great bitterness to create a play of aromas of hoppy excellence. The malt comes into play more and more as the drinking pleasure progresses and offers the hops a soft, sweet stage.
