When we think of Scottish stouts, attractive brews in the deepest black-brown come to mind. We think of creamy ivory foam crowns that smell of strong roasted malt and delicately melting chocolate. As our thirst for beer grows, we fantasize about silky-smooth creations that trickle down our throats with luxurious textures and a variety of roasted aromas, leaving us wanting more.
It seems like Belhaven Brewery took a look inside our heads and made our pipe dream a reality, because their Black Scottish Stout is everything we dared to dream. Despite an astonishingly slim 4.2% alcohol content, the stout delivers everything you would expect from a Scottish brew. The mahogany-colored beauty is crowned with hazelnut-brown foam and smells seductively of roasted grain when poured. The initial taste is velvety and brings strong notes of chocolate, freshly brewed coffee and dark roasted malt to the tongue. A certain bitterness balances the powerful sweetness, but Belhaven’s team has reduced the bitterness to an elegant, mild level. A single hop variety rounds off the aromatics harmoniously.
Due to its voluminous variety of flavors and soft sweetness, the Black Scottish Stout goes perfectly with desserts, intense dishes with game and other dark meat or a piece of fine dark chocolate.
