The strongest and most alcoholic beer in the range of the Dutch Brouwerij De Molen looks quite harmless at first glance: Bommen & Granaten (in English "Bombs & Grenades") presents itself in a ruby-red, shiny copper tone in the glass and is crowned with a fine-pored cap of ivory-colored foam. You would not suspect at first that this red beauty contains a whopping 11.0% alcohol. A tangy scent of champagne, white grapes, citrus fruits, honey and caramel fills the air and elegantly reflects both the malt used and the hops. The first sip reveals a powerful body that combines malty sweetness, hoppy fruit notes and a creamy mouthfeel to create an exquisite pleasure. Delicately melting caramel, juicy citrus fruits, warm spices, roasted grain and a hint of liqueur enchant the palate. The barleywine ends in an alcoholic finish that leaves a sweet taste of brown sugar, yeast and sherry on the tongue.
Thanks to its complex aromas and balance between sweetness, freshness and strong grains, Bommen & Granaten goes very well with a variety of dishes. You could serve the barley wine as an aperitif with a cheese platter, but you could also finish your meal with it and pair it with a fine dessert. We like to drink the fruity beer with a rich chocolate cake.
