Most of us only know basil as an aromatic garnish for Insalata Caprese or as a pesto. However, the deep green herb can do much more than you give it credit for!
Long before people enjoyed tomatoes with mozzarella and pasta with pesto, people knew about the magical powers of basil. The plant, also known as royal herb, originally comes from Asia, but has also been found in Europe for centuries and has been used as a remedy for about as long. Basil essential oils are anti-inflammatory and stress-reducing. In the form of tea or tinctures, the active ingredients contained can be used as herbal medicines to treat insomnia, restlessness, headaches and stomach problems.
The FREEDL brewery has also discovered the miracle herb for itself. In collaboration with a herb farm at 1500 meters, the team searched for an herb that reflects their alpine homeland and found alpine basil. The concentration-enhancing and stress-relieving green became the basis of Calma, an extremely relaxing after-work beer. The non-alcoholic Pale Ale combines the unmistakable spiciness of basil with the freshness and citrus flavors of the beer style, creating a brew that is the perfect end to a busy day. Calma is full-bodied and brings a whole bunch of basil into your glass. Get ready for rest and relaxation!
