The Black IPA is a relic of days long gone. At the time when the classic India Pale Ale was created, there was already a darker version of the export beer that impressed with its strong character, intensive hopping and complex intensity. Today, the majority of craft brewers tend towards the lighter-colored IPAs, but there are a few who are fighting to ensure that the classic Black IPA is not forgotten.
These pioneers include the brewers at Steamworks Brewing Company. From three properly roasted types of malt and five complementary hops, the resourceful team produces a beer that catapults the old classic into the present with full force.
Steamworks Black Angel IPA flows into the glass in a deep shade of brown that, thanks to its opaque shade, is almost reminiscent of freshly brewed coffee. An ivory-colored crown of fine-pored foam sits enthroned on it, the scent of roasted malt, toasted bread and caramel combined with floral notes of hops, grapefruit and pine to form an irresistible mixture. The first taste reveals a strong body with a velvety soft mouthfeel and gentle carbonation. A soft sweetness gently settles on the tongue and brings with it notes of roasted malt, toffee and liquorice. The hops provide complementary aromas of candied grapefruit peel and spicy pine resin. A dry bitterness complements the taste profile perfectly.
