Oranges are one of the most popular citrus fruits of all. You can peel them and eat them plain or squeeze out their juice. However, you can also prepare a whole range of delicious dishes with it. We love the sunny yellow guys in salads, for example. To do this, we remove the fillets between the skins and serve them with finely sliced fennel and a vinaigrette made from cold-pressed olive oil, white balsamic vinegar and honey. The whole thing is seasoned with sea salt and freshly ground pepper and is a culinary delight in both summer and winter.
What the Espiga brewery conjures up from oranges is no less enjoyable: using sun-drenched, organic fruits from Valencia, less than three hours away, the team brews an unconventional beer that combines the taste of freshly squeezed oranges with gentle hops and wild yeasts.
The creation is called Orange Is My New Love and is made from two types of must. One part is an orange must that was fermented with lactic acid bacteria and supplemented with freshly squeezed orange juice, the other is a farmhouse must that was enriched with Cascade hops and whose fermentation was triggered by wild yeasts. In combination, they produce a fine beer with lively carbon dioxide, a strong 7.0% alcohol content, a complex body and the elegant fruit acid of freshly harvested oranges.
