The anchor is a fundamental part of a ship and ensures that it stays in place when needed. With tremendous weight and arms that hook onto rocks or dig into the seabed, the anchor holds the watercraft in place and prevents currents and waves from carrying it away. Buoys and other shipping signals are also placed using anchors. In the past, heavy stones were simply used on ropes, but today there are a variety of different anchors that are selected to suit the anchorage, weather and depth of the water. In many cultures, the anchor symbolizes values such as loyalty and reliability, while in Christianity it also represents hope. In maritime aesthetics, the anchor is often used for decoration and as an ornament.
