The Bayreuth brewery Maisel & Friends is known for supporting the young brewing scene with advice and support. The team has launched a variety of projects that give newcomers to the industry the opportunity to try things out and take their first steps with expert help. The brewery always opens its doors to so-called cuckoo brewers. Although these people brew beer, they do not yet have their own brewing system and are therefore dependent on the quality of established breweries. In addition to their hospitality, Maisel & Friends have also come up with a home brewing competition. Together with BrauBeviale, the country’s most skilled home brewers have been chosen every year for the past six years and the best beer is brewed in a limited edition by Maisel & Friends and the lucky winner.
In 2023, laypeople were given a particularly tricky task: the home brewers were supposed to create a modern version of the Munich Dark. The aim was to mix up the dark, sweet malt variety of the classic with a modern hop kick. The shining winner was Paul Schüßler, whose Hoppy Dunkel took the jury’s palates and hearts by storm.
The Hessian has come up with a hazelnut-brown Munich Dark that complements the traditional flavor of creamy caramel, roasted nuts and chocolate with hoppy components with hints of juicy peach, tangy lemon and sun-kissed orange. Unbeatable!
