When the Stone brewery released its very first birthday beer 25 years ago, its anniversary brew caused a stir in the then still young craft beer scene. The Stone IPA spread like wildfire, sparking pure horror here and there. The hop bomb was too intense for the untrained palates of the craft beer novices. Too much bitterness, too much hops, too much of everything! Although not many liked the beer at first, it still gave the brewery a good reputation. From then on, Stone was considered an absolute pioneer when it came to hopped beers and has held this pioneering role to this day.
The enthusiasm for hops in the craft beer industry now knows no bounds. The horizon was blown up and the motto is "more is more". Brewers toss indecent amounts of the green gold into their cauldrons, outbidding each other in their daring. One could say that Stone started the ball rolling for this development.
In August 2022, the brewery celebrated its 26th anniversary and, in honor of the festive occasion, launched a new and — believe it or not — even more intense version of its IPA of the time. Their 26th Anniversary Imperial IPA tops their original creation with a hefty 9.7% ABV, punchy 80 bitterness units and a massive boost in hops.
Happy hoppy birthday!
