Mata Hari is not only the name of a dancer, artist and alleged spy from the early 20th century, about whom numerous films have been made and books written, it is also the name of an iconic bar in the heart of Nuremberg. The location in Weißgerbergasse has existed since 1994. Previously, there was a pilsner bar on the same spot, which was simply called "the pub". According to legend, Linda, a young, rather pretty woman, took over the restaurant and wanted to breathe new life into the dusty establishment with a different name. Because she could wrap the customers around her finger with Mata Hari-like charm, this name was suggested to her. In the years that followed, Mata Hari became a meeting point for thirsty Nuremberg residents who appreciate the cozy atmosphere and still feel at home there today.
To mark the 30th anniversary of “Nuremberg’s Living Room”, the team at Orca Brau, who can often be found there themselves, have brewed a birthday beer. Their Mata Hari is an Irish-inspired red ale with a palatable 4.9% alcohol content and a malt-focused character. In the glass, the anniversary drink is presented in a copper-red shimmering chestnut brown with a fine-pored crown in ivory. It smells of red walnuts, roasted nuts, strongly roasted malt and creamy caramel and tastes like that too.
