The Belgian brewery Het Anker is known for its traditional beers. A Christmas beer is definitely part of the repertoire of a tried and tested brewery. After the Belgians suspended this tradition for a while, there has now been a winter festival beer from Het Anker since 2002.
The Gouden Carolus is published annually at the start of the cold season and warms body and soul with a massive 10.5% alcohol content, a fairytale look and a powerful character. The festive beer gets its Christmas flavor through the use of six different spices and herbs. The malts and three types of hops are responsible for the voluminous body. So that the golden boy can mature to its full glory by winter, the beer is brewed as early as August. The beer specialty matures over the autumn and gains depth, complexity and character.
At the end of this elaborate process there is a mahogany-colored beer with noble ruby-red hints and a creamy foam that smells tempting of star anise, cardamom, spicy yeast, vanilla and caramel. The first taste reveals the fullness of taste and creamy texture of this powerful beer and delights the palate with heavy fruit notes, caramel, hints of speculoos and the fire of various herbs and spices.
