The decision between beer or wine has plagued humanity for centuries. Both drinks have their advantages and the wonderful property that they can make every evening a special treat. As beer retailers, we are of course somewhat biased, but we can definitely understand the appeal of the occasional glass of wine. Luckily, breweries have taken on the eternal question and come up with an unbeatable answer that makes the whole decision unnecessary. More and more brewers are venturing into a hybrid : instead of beer OR wine, they choose beer AND wine. These hybrids combine the best of both worlds and make wine connoisseurs and beer lovers equally happy.
The Ale-Mania team from Bonn brought two experts on board for their very own hybrid. Julien Renard is a winemaker and wine expert. In collaboration with beer sommelier Holger Beßlich, he supported the brewers.
Their work is a so-called Riesling Blonde, which combines the wort of the Belgian classic Blonde with must from the Riesling grape variety. The grapes come from Winninger Göttchesberg and not only provide their wonderful aroma, but also a range of wild yeasts. These were supplemented by additional yeasts and together they started fermentation. The finished brew is light gold, delicately sour and heavenly fruity.
