Don’t be afraid of the dark – this is the slogan the Icelandic brewery Einstök uses to promote its Toasted Porter. In contrast to their very clean, clear ales, the porter is a cornucopia of rich roasted aromas and dark notes.
Anyone who has ever been to Iceland knows that Icelanders love coffee. Coffee is drunk at every opportunity and in every unlikely place. You are offered coffee at the bank, in the post office, in the waiting room at the dentist and everywhere else. In the past, when coffee was still a luxury good, people saved the fine beans for spring. When the first rays of sunshine touched the frozen ground after a long, hard winter, people brewed a delicious cup of coffee to celebrate spring. This tradition still exists today, and fortunately the occasions for drinking coffee have multiplied.
It comes as no surprise to anyone that Einstök now brews a coffee-colored beer that also has a nice coffee note thanks to wonderful roasted malts. The dark black beer has a robust body and enchants with clear toffee and caramel notes as well as aromas of dark chocolate and of course coffee. The delicate hint of espresso cannot be denied and combines with spicy licorice notes to form a dark dream team.
