The Dutch brewery Emelisse specializes in barrel-aged beers. In addition to their popular White Label series , there is now a new creation that tempts with dark aromas and the unmistakable charm of barrel-aged beers.
The Sour Dark Ale is the latest addition to the Emelisse brewery's wide range. After the brewing process has been completed, the dark beer matures for a further 1.5 years in wooden barrels that were previously used to refine port wine. The fine sour beer impresses with an unusual flavor combination: seductive fruit notes of ripe cherries and sweet berries are followed by a full-bodied hint of delicately melting chocolate towards the finish - an infallible pairing!
Emelisse's Dark Sour Ale is presented in a deep dark mahogany brown with rusty red reflections in the glass. A hand's breadth of creamy, hazelnut-brown foam crowns the beer and exudes a wonderful scent of heavy port wine, sweet summer berries, soft caramel and roasted malt. Notes of oak, vanilla and a subtle acidity round off the olfactory first impression and make you look forward to the first sip. The initial taste shows a complex body with a fine, dry taste and pleasant acidity. Aromas of ripe cherries and red currants gently wash over the palate, accompanied by the acidity of good balsamic vinegar, as well as a full-bodied port wine aroma and notes of oak. A small roasted note and a velvety hint of chocolate elegantly complement the play of aromas.
The Dark Sour Ale from Emelisse is a round, absolutely successful beer that gets its complex character from maturing in port wine barrels.
