The Barrel Finished series from the Dutch brewery Emelisse is a range of fine, barrel-aged beer specialties. Barrel Finished # 3 is an Imperial Russian Stout that matured in whiskey barrels for four weeks after the brewing process was completed. In order to give the beer its special character, the barrels of the highly aromatic whiskey variety Kilchoman were selected. Four weeks is a relatively short time in terms of barrel aging. The Emelisse brewers have deliberately chosen this period of time in order to add a touch of whiskey to the beer, but not to completely mask the excellent taste of the Imperial Stout.
The Imperial Russian Stout and the well-known Kilchoman whiskey enter into a delicious symbiosis and combine their forces into an extraordinarily fine beer.
Emelisses Barrel Finished # 3 presents itself in the darkest shade of mahogany in the glass and only shows a small veil of hazelnut brown foam. From an olfactory point of view, the dark beauty inspires with a strong peat scent, which combines in the nose with wood, spicy whiskey, dark chocolate and roasted malt to form a seductive symphony. The initial taste reveals a voluminous body with harmoniously coordinated aromas. Soft and sweet notes of caramel, chocolate and ripe cherries caress the palate. A hint of liquorice and a little vanilla add spice, while strong roasted aromas and a touch of smoke give the beer contrast and structure.
